Agentic Shopping News and Good Reads You May have Missed this Week... (wk 26/52)
Highlights from my Agentic Shopping chats with Wedbush and Fortune. Great cocktail and commerce piece, BigCommerce/Feedonomics+Perplexity, 2 cool decks and 2 deep Agentic Payments Pieces!
This week I had two in-depth conversations with internet analyst Scott Devitt at Wedbush and Jason Del Rey at Fortune about our vision of where Agentic Shopping is heading, how it could put Amazon into an interesting Innovator’s Dilemma.

If you missed the livestream (they don’t do recordings), good news, you get the highlights here. In this PDF, Devitt summarizes our conversation.
And here is the presentation I walked through with Scott:
Jason Del Rey Fortune Q+A
Jason Del Rey has been following e-commerce, with an especially keen focus on Amazon, since he was at AllthingsD/Recode and in fact has a great book on Amazon vs. Walmart that I highly recommend called: “Seller takes all”.
In this “Fortune Q+A” piece we caught up and I shared more about the risk I see to Amazon’s Ad biz and then the marketplace biz from the Agentic Shopping Engines.
Cocktails and Commerce and Agentic Shopping Surfin’ Safari 🌊🏄🏻♂️
Cocktails and Commerce is a substack and podcast featuring two sage long-time commerce technologist veterans: Bryan Walker and Bill Friend.
In this substack piece they go really deep into Agentic and then pontificate with some interesting predictions of what commerce will look like in 2030.
BigCommerce + Pereplexity
One of Perplexity’s early partners in their Agentic Shopping, “Buy with Pro” was Shopify, and this week saw BigCommerce’s Feedonomics subsidiary team up with Perplexity to provide a product datafeed directly to Perplexity. It’s not clear if Perplexity will still use a web data extraction technique to augment the catalog or just work with the feed. Details here.
AI Trends Deck 1: Menlo Ventures
Menlo Ventures had some interesting AI consumer data from a survey of 5000 US Adults. They then parlay that into an investment thesis supporting around consumer AI. While they don’t focus too much on Shopping, it has some mentions. For each of the frontier model companies building agentic shopping capabilities there are 50-100 startups doing innovative things - usually in certain categories or with different twists. It’s going to get really busy by Holiday 25!
Deck 2: SensorTower: How ChatGPT is Reshaping Consumer Life
SensorTower is a company that does market intellingence. They just released a great read where they deep dive into what consumers are chatting about, where they are coming from and going to and what’s this mean for SEO?
Andrew Dresner on Agentic payments
For Agentic Shopping to work, we’re going to need some new payment paradigms. I’m more of a core-ecommerce person, so when it comes to payments, I like to beef up from the experts. This short YouTube interview does a great job covering agentic commerce payments basics and then touching on some of the interesting use cases that could be coming.
Want to go even deeper on Agentic Payments?
If you liked that last one, then Richard Crone has a great post and comments where he goes even further here.
Forget Digital, AI Runs a Physical Store, well, sorta.
I don’t want to spoil this one for you. The setup is Anthropic setup Claude to run a physical store and it was surprisingly good at some things and bad at others. You’ll want to read it to find out more.
It’s a Wrap!
That’s it for this week, we’ll be taking off next week for the 🇺🇸 holiday and will be back the week of July 7th.
