The Launch of Googleâs Universal Cart
This morning in a blog post (here), Googleâs Senior Director, Product Management, Consumer Shopping, Suresh Ganapathy announced that Universal Cart is officially available to all users in the US. Since the early experience I discovered in June there have been many enhancements to the user experience, letâs dig in.
Feature 1: Multi-Item, Multi-Merchant Cart
This video demonstrates the capability..
by adding a Steve Madden hand bag and a Quince sweater - two very different merchants, two different items - one Universal Cart.
Feature 2: Price Drop and Inventory Alerts
Not only does Universal Cart allow you to add items to the cart and checkout (weâll get there soon), it also acts as a type of âwishlist/product trackerâ. You are alerted whenever the price changes on something in your cart:
This BFCM, this could be the killer consumer agentic commerce feature. The shopper can add all their gift purchases in one cart and track the deals across all the Black Fridayâ Cyber Monday promotions and pull the trigger when they get to the price they want.
Not pictured, letâs say that you want a Nintendo Switch 2 as a gift, but itâs sold out - you can add to Universal Cart and get an alert when itâs in stock.
Unfortunately, Cart stops there today, requiring human interaction. Conversely, Amazonâs AFS is ahead on autonomy - the Auto Buy feature allows you to both set an inventory or price feature and when your âtriggerâ is met, automatically buy the item. Should they choose to go this far, Google has all the pieces now to provide similar functionality.
Feature 3: Loyalty and Credit Card Features
Here we have some Ulta products in the Universal Cart - the cart conveniently tells us about any loyalty offers, promo codes and credit-card benefits. In the Retailgentic Five Levels of Agentic Commerce, we talk about Levelâs 4 and 5 giving the consumer a 360-degree view of their options across all the dimensions they may consider as part of the purchase: product features, price, merchant, loyalty, payment benefits, shipping times, etc. Googleâs Universal Cart is ahead of the entire pack of answer engines, personal agents and even retailer agents.
Feature 4: Universal Cart Checkout
Finally, at the time of checkout, Universal Cart allows the consumer to checkout the items they now want to purchase and they have two options: checkout on the merchantâs site, or checkout âoff siteâ via the Universal Cart and Google Pay:
Here we see the consumer purchase the Steve Madden bag right in the cart, then checkout 2 Ulta items by âtransferringâ the cart over to Ulta.com for completion.
Accessing Universal Cart
Universal Cart is available in the US in AI Mode. When I was in the early experience group and did Traditional Google product searches that invoke the Google Shopping widget, I was given the Universal Cart in that mode too. Later today weâll post a live demo of the âofficialâ version of Universal Cart and look for this behavior in the production version.
Googleâs When to Buy - Holiday Gifting Guide - Data-Backed Tips for Optimizing Holiday Shopping
Also this morning, in a blog post (here) Google announced their first âWhen to buy guideâ. The guide researched the bazillions of historic datapoints in the Google Shopping Graph and has tips surfaced from that data for the big gift categories:
My personal favorite insights:
Pet supplies - lock down your dog and cat items on Black Friday, but speciality pets, wait for late December for the best deals you snake, turtle and ferret lovers.
TVs - Black Friday is go time - load that 65â OLED beast in the Universal Cart and get ready!
Sadly Cyber Monday is losing some of itâs juice, as it doesnât get a call out that I saw.
Thatâs a Wrap đ
Only 42 days left until Thanksgiving, last year in the 2-3 days leading up to Thanksgiving we had ChatGPT launch a Shopping Research (pieces worked their way into GPT-6 Dynamic UI for products recently), Target launched their ChatGPT app and Perplexity&PayPal launched their short-lived âInstant Buyâ functionality (on Thanksgiving Eve) - so we have lots of time for more big news to break. The best way to follow it all? Yep you guessed it đ
