🚨Flash: Instacart 'App' Is LIVE on ChatGPT and it Uses ACP Instant Checkout - Which Can Now Handle Multiple-item Carts! 🤯
Innovation in AI Time doesn't take Holiday off, let's dig into the first live demo you will see of this!
At 1PM ET, Patrick Collison shared this on X→
And then this page went live on OpenAI announcing the news.
Oddly, nothing yet from the OpenAI account, SamA or Fidji accounts 🤷♂️
Anyway, Retailgentic is undefeated at being your first source to see these products LIVE and here we go, for the first time we give you a live look at the Instagram app live in ChatGPT WITH Instant Checkout - very cool!
Who’s in the mood for Pecan Pie?
Let’s use a real-world example. Patrick wants an apple crisp, I’m in more of a Pecan Pie mood. Let’s make some Pie! (Note this is ChatGPT on a mobile web browser which is the combo I needed to make this work, not available in app yet).
There are three parts to this demo:
Setup Instacart App in ChatGPT
Load and optimize the cart
Checkout
Setup Instacart App in ChatGPT
First, I use this prompt to invoke Instacart - you can see in my prompt it has now ‘activated’ the Instcart app inside ChatGPT which is indicated by the logo down there - red box is my highlight.
It then gives me a ‘ChatGPT wants to connect to Instacart” prompt - I didn’t take a shot of this for the Target app demo, it looked EXACTLY like this.
Hitting continue takes me to this information screen, that is very transparent about what is being exchange between the two entities and why→
I log into instcart, and get this auth screen now on the instacart side→
I hit Allow and we’re off to the races! Let’s load up the cart.
Load and Optimize the Instacart Cart
My initial prompt already threw 9 items in the cart→
Which I can see in the Instacart widget or ChatGPT conveniently lists them and even TELLS ME about the cart widget and how it works - pretty wild.
I’m making two pies, one for me and one for the audience, here you go→
It adjusts the quantities of the pecans, then asks:
Who doesn’t want the extras?
It adds the whip, the ice cream and then I asked it to swap out the ice cream from store brand to Breyers→ (I’m a basic guy, but not THAT basic).
Now we have a cart with 10 items - $45 that I’ve optimized.
Let’s Checkout!
First you get a deliver to/time preference/tip screen that should look familiar to Instacart users, but it’s different, this is ACP/Instant Checkout!
AND for the first time, we are seeing a multi-item ChatGPT ACP-powered Instant Checkout! Folks were fighting me on LI saying this couldn’t be done quickly (guess what -it’s done already)
Hit Continue and…
We have a very standard payment screen, it has remembered my payment from the ChatGPT side, this is not coming from Instacart, Instacart doesn’t know this Visa card, it only lives in this ChatGPT account.
Summary: More Checkout Innovation!
There you have it - a very nice interface here where Instacart is powered by my chat interactions. I get the benefit of the ChatGPT recipe knowledge, meal planning and other knowledge with the convenience of Instacart. Grocery shopping will never be the same.
What’s truly exciting to me is that ChatGPT has used this as a way to expand ACP to:
Work with Apps - This was in the spec, we didn’t know how this would work and I love that it’s the same checkout as the integrated card experience, consumers love consistency.
Muti-item Instant cart is LIVE - All ChatGPT needs to work on the front end around the integrated card experience and we’ll have a multi-cart checkout. Obviously this can be done by Q1, heck, maybe even by end-of-yr!
Enjoy, are you able to get it to work? What do you think? Let us know in comments→
