One detail in Shopify's own announcement decides whether small merchants get anything out of this. The 11 January 2026 post says the Universal Commerce Protocol lets agents carry discount codes, loyalty credentials, subscription billing cadence and selling terms such as final sale or pre-order timing through checkout, and that it works with any payment processor. For a shop with no developers, that is the gap between being listed and actually selling on its own terms. The Agentic plan opens Shopify Catalog to brands with no Shopify storefront. The post does not explain how Catalog ranks competing listings once everyone is in it.
